Why Buy

Sumatra Mandheling is a deep, earthy, and full-bodied coffee with rich cocoa, spice, and low acidity. It’s bold, grounding, and intensely satisfying—perfect for those who like their coffee strong and distinctive.

You’ll really enjoy this coffee if you already enjoy coffees like Monsoon Malabar.

We really like how the syrup flavours ground this bold coffee into a really enjoyable intense espresso.

Is This For You?

You’ll love this if you enjoy dark, heavy coffees with low acidity and strong earthy depth. It’s ideal for espresso or rich, milk-based drinks. You might prefer something else if you prefer bright, fruity, or delicate coffees.

If you want a coffee that’s an all day easy drinking bean, then perhaps something like our chocolatey and nutty Brazil Santos would be a better choice.

Sumtatra Mandheling

Sumatra Mandheling is a coffee unlike any other — deep, earthy, and shaped by one of the most unique processing methods in the world.

Grown on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, this coffee comes from smallholder farmers working in rich volcanic soils beneath dense rainforest canopy. The climate here is humid and unpredictable, and over time, producers developed a method to adapt — known as wet hulling, or Giling Basah.

Unlike traditional washed coffees, where beans are fully dried before milling, wet hulling removes the parchment layer while the beans are still soft and moisture-rich. This gives Sumatra Mandheling its distinctive appearance — slightly irregular, deep green beans — and more importantly, its unmistakable cup profile.

The result is a coffee with a heavy body, low acidity, and a richness that feels almost savoury. Expect notes of dark chocolate, cedar, spice, and earthy depth, with a smooth, lingering finish that sets it apart from brighter, fruit-forward coffees.

This is a coffee that doesn’t try to be delicate — it leans into boldness, texture, and intensity. It’s the kind of cup that holds its own in espresso, pairs beautifully with milk, and offers something completely different for those used to lighter profiles.

At Acorns Coffee, Sumatra Mandheling is one of our most distinctive coffees — a true outlier in the range. It’s perfect for those who enjoy full-bodied, low-acidity coffees with depth and character, and for anyone looking to explore a completely different side of speciality coffee.
