Why Buy

Monsoon Malabar is a unique, aged-style coffee with heavy body, low acidity, and distinctive earthy, spicy notes. It’s smooth in texture but bold in character, offering something completely different from standard origins.

Is This For You?

You’ll love this if you enjoy strong, low-acidity coffees with a heavy body and unusual flavour profile. It works especially well as an espresso or with milk. You might prefer something else if you prefer bright, clean, or fruit-forward coffees.

Monsoon Malabar

Monsoon Malabar is one of the most distinctive coffees in the world, shaped as much by history as by flavour.

Its story dates back to the colonial era, when green coffee beans were shipped from India to Europe on long sea voyages aboard wooden sailing ships. As the beans crossed the Arabian Sea, they were exposed for months to warm, humid monsoon winds. By the time they arrived, the beans had changed completely — swelling in size, fading in colour, and developing a uniquely smooth, mellow character.

When faster modern shipping replaced these journeys, something was lost. The coffee no longer carried that signature profile. So producers along India’s Malabar Coast recreated the process, carefully exposing the beans to monsoon winds in open-sided warehouses, allowing the humid air to transform them just as it once did at sea.

The result is a coffee unlike any other — full-bodied, and incredibly smooth, with earthy depth, gentle spice, and a soft, almost creamy finish.

Our Monsoon Malabar has been recognised with a Great Taste Award by the Guild of Fine Food — a mark of quality judged by industry experts, chefs, and food critics.

The judges praised its distinctive character, noting its:

“smooth, low-acidity profile with a full body and lingering depth”

and highlighted the way its:

“earthy, gently spiced notes create a unique and memorable cup”

This is exactly what makes Monsoon Malabar so special. The traditional monsooning process creates a coffee that stands apart — bold yet balanced, rich without bitterness, and incredibly easy to drink.

At Acorns Coffee, we’ve always loved this coffee for its story and individuality. To have it recognised at the Great Taste Awards simply confirms what we already knew — this is a truly exceptional and characterful cup.

What Makes It Unique?

Monsoon Malabar undergoes a rare and traditional process found only in India. After harvest, the beans are exposed to monsoon winds and humid air over several months, causing them to swell, soften, and transform in colour and character.

This process dramatically reduces acidity while enhancing body and earthy complexity – creating a profile unlike any other coffee.

Tasting Notes

Dark Chocolate • Spice • Earthy

Expect a full-bodied, heavy cup with deep notes of dark chocolate and roasted nuts, layered with warming spice and a gentle earthy character. There’s very little acidity, creating a smooth, mellow profile that feels rich and rounded from start to finish.

Why You’ll Love It

FAQs

What does this coffee taste like?

Monsooned Malabar is bold, earthy, and full-bodied, with deep notes of spice, toasted nuts, and a gentle smokiness. It has an incredibly smooth, low-acid profile with a heavy, lingering finish that’s quite unlike typical coffees.

Is this coffee good for espresso?

Yes — it creates a rich, intense espresso with a thick crema and very low acidity. It’s ideal if you prefer a heavier, more traditional-style espresso, and it pairs particularly well with milk for a strong, smooth cup.

What brew methods work best?

This coffee works especially well in espresso machines and cafetière (French press), where its full body and depth really stand out. It can also be used in filter, though its bold character is best suited to immersion or espresso brewing.

Is this suitable for beginners?

It depends on your taste. If you enjoy smooth, smooth coffees with bold, earthy flavours, this can be a great choice. However, if you’re new to coffee and prefer lighter, sweeter profiles, you may want to start with something smoother before exploring this one.
